Tom Barkhoefer

Feb. 22, 1953 — Dec. 19, 2014

Thomas Allen Barkhoefer was born in Salem, Ore., Feb. 22, 1953. Shortly afterward his family returned to Great Falls, Mont., where Tom attended school, graduating from Charles M. Russell High School in 1971.

He continued his education taking college courses towards an associate’s degree, and eventually began taking trade-related classes. He became a journeyman welder and a member of both the Pipefitters’ and Iron Workers’ unions for more than 30 years until his retirement in 2010.

He married Kaaren Haagen in 1973 and the couple had two sons. The family settled in Oregon.

Tom loved the great outdoors and was an avid hunter and sport fisherman. His other hobbies included making custom firearms and reloading his own ammunition. He also had a great love for animals. His constant companion was his golden retriever, Dillon, who he took everywhere with him.

Tom was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy June McCulley; his father Edwin Henry Barkhoefer; two brothers, James and William; and his best friend, Dillon.

He is survived by a brother, Edward “Ted” Barkhoefer,; two sons, Daniel and Christon; and his lifelong friends, Mike and Cathy Smith of Kalispell, Mont.

Tom was a resident of Castle Rock when he passed away peacefully Dec. 19, 2014, after a sudden illness.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Columbia Funeral Service. At Tom’s request, his ashes will be scattered in the Montana woods and streams where he would hunt and fish.
